Overview
The practice of Vipassana meditation involves following the principles of Dhamma/Dharma, the universal law of nature. It entails walking on the noble eightfold path, which is broadly categorised into Sila (Morality), Samadhi (concentration), and Pañña (wisdom, insight).
essence, Vipassana is about observing reality as it is, with equanimity and awareness, leading to liberation from mental afflictions and the cycle of suffering.
Rules and Requirements
Speak Less – cultivate silence to enhance inner awareness.
Avoid stimulation – stay away from reels, porn, short content, arguments, or anything that distracts or excites the mind.
Do not indulge in negative self-talk – avoid deluding yourself with self-criticism, doubts, or harmful thoughts.
Step 1 – Practice Sila (Morality)
Students begin by observing the five moral precepts: abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicants. These precepts are the foundation of a wholesome life, creating mental clarity and calmness.
By practicing Sila, the mind becomes less restless and more receptive to meditation. It reduces internal conflicts and prepares the ground for deeper insight.
Step 2 – Practice Anapana Meditation (Concentration)
Focus your attention on the natural sensation of the breath at the nostrils or upper lip. Observe the coolness of the inhalation and the warmth of the exhalation without controlling or manipulating the breath.
This practice develops concentration (samadhi), helping to quiet the restless mind and bring awareness to the present moment. It creates a stable mental state necessary for Vipassana.
Step 3 – Practice Vipassana (Insight)
For the last six and a half days, the focus shifts to penetrating the entire physical and mental structure with the clarity of panna (wisdom). Observe bodily sensations—such as tingling, heat, cold, or pressure—without attachment or aversion, simply noticing their arising and passing away.
This process reveals the impermanent, unsatisfactory, and non-self nature of all phenomena, leading to profound insight and liberation from mental defilements.
